What’s the role of health insurers in single payer?

There is no role for health insurers in providing the universal comprehensive insurance coverage.

Single payer means a single public payer for universal comprehensive coverage. Health insurers have no role. It is possible that a single payer plan permits supplemental coverage; if so, insurers might have a small, highly constrained role. Insurers might also play a focused technical role in administering the system – e.g., collecting and managing medical encounter and billing data.
